Winner
of the Jean Rhodes Memorial Award, 2004 |
| |
| |
| In 2004
the Jean Rhodes Award was presented to Carmel Ballinger, Head of
Library at Wesley College. Jane Graham, the Teacher
Librarian and co-worker who nominated Carmel, cited many of Carmel’s
achievements and qualities. Not the least of these are her
fantastic sense of humour and her approachable, down to earth manner,
which have served to greatly improve the image of the teacher librarian,
and the library, since Carmel began at Wesley some 15 years ago.
Since joining Wesley, Carmel has managed significant growth, change
and improvement of Wesley’s library facilities and services
and has maintained a leading role in the promotion of literature
and the teaching of research skills and information literacy, with
both students and staff. She has a vast knowledge of literature
and is a great researcher, and
seems to be always able to find the right book to suit every boy.

Carmel was a founder of the Wesley Staff
Bookclub, which meets regularly at the Millpoint Caffe, and she frequently
provides professional development opportunities to Wesley staff on
such topics as the Role of the Library; Assignment writing; Information
skills; plagiarism, copyright and so on. Carmel has maintained a high
profile among teachers and management by regularly participating in
faculty meetings and committees within the school, including the Technology
Management Committee and she regularly liaises with administrative
staff. Carmel shows a genuine commitment to best practice in her profession.
She has been active in professional association committees, attends
ASLA and CBC
conferences (often at her own expense), as well as theWA annual Conference,
many of the PDs provided by AISWA and WASLA, and other courses at
her own expense. She is a member of WASLA,
AISWA and ALIA and has a personal
subscription to a number of reading journals. She has been a judge
for CBC and is presently a judge in the Make your own Picture Book
Competition. Jane has found Carmel to be invaluable as a mentor and
helper. Clearly she is very deserving of the Jean Rhodes Memorial
Award for Excellence 2004. Congratulations, Carmel.
